The frontman of My Chemical Romance, Gerard Arthur Way was born April 9,1977 in Summit, New Jersey but he was raised in Belleville, New Jersey. He was Itallian and Scottish ancestry which is not surprising where he got his good looks. He has a sibling, a younger brother named Michael James Way who is three years younger than him. The funny part is he is shorter than his younger brother by three inches. In fact, he is the shortest among all the members of My Chemical Romance.
He attended Belleville High School and graduated in 1995. He had a great passion towards arts especially in comic-book industry. He decided to attend the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999.
His grandmother, Elena Lee Rush had played a great influence on him as she taught him to sing, paint and perform from a young age. He first began singing publicly in the fourth grade where he gained an opportunity to play the role of Peter Pan in a school musical production. His grandmother bought him his first guitar at the age of eight.
Before he become lead vocalist of My Chemical Romance, he worked as comic bookstore clerk in New York City. September 11 2001 was a day which changed his life from a dull boring clerk to a famous entertainer who is recognised all around the world. Witnessing the plane crash into the World Trade Center, he decided to start a band. With his friend, Matt Pelissier, My Chemical Romance was born approximately one week after the September 11 attack. Gerard wrote the song entitled " Skylines and Turnstiles" to express his feelings and emotions on the tragedy. Then, My Chemical Romance began to establish as a band comprised of his younger brother, Raymond Toro and Frank Anthony Iero.
Gerard completely obsesses about dark stuff; anything twisted, weird and a little evil. He is always trying to write new material which he usually get from the newspaper. He thinks lyrics are a way of telling stories and expressing emotions. For example, one song from My Chemical Romance's second album, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, " Helena" was written as a tribute to his beloved grandmother.
Gerard Way not only sings in his own band but also contribute vocally to the other band such as " Kill The Music" and " Head Automatica's". Not only that, in early 2009, he collaborated with Japanese rock singer, Kyousuke Himura to produce new theme song for Advent Children Complete entitled, "Safe and Sound".
Gerard Way loved and enjoys reading comic books as a child and his favourite superhero was always Wolverine. His first attempt at writing comic was at the age of sixteen, where he wrote a comic series called, "On Raven's Wings". However. the comic was a failure. He then began writing another comic book, "The Umbrella Academy" in 2007 which later began a hit and recognized by all comic fans from all over the world. This comic series has earned him an Eisner Award-Winning.
He recovered from alcoholism and prescription of drug addiction. However, he still enjoyed smoking Marlboro red cigarettes. He is deathly afraid of needles, so he does not have any piercings or tatoos. In September 3, 2007 was the happiest moment for Gerard but for his fans especially girls were mourning as their idol got married. He married to Lyn-Z, the bassist of Mindless Self Indulgence at the backstage after a concert in Colorado. He currently lives with his wife in Los Angeles, California. Their marriage is blessed with a daughter, Bandit Lee Way who was born in California on May 27 2009.
